Taliferro was born in Fort Worth, Texas; the son of African American parents. Taliferro has an older brother named, James Damon Taliferro, born in 1957. Taliferro graduated from Texas Christian University. Taliferro married Cathey L. Tyree, together they had 3 children. He also had 2 sisters and a brother. Taliferro had a grandson. Taliferro was also known as Bear Taliferro and Michael "Bear" Taliferro. Taliferro's religion was Christianity, Taliferro had also gone to a Christian school.

Taliferro died on May 4, 2006, in Los Angeles, California at the age of 45, he suffered a stroke. He was buried at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery, his whole family had attended his funeral.
