Standing at the top of the heap of Soul music back in the day was Motown. A well run music machine that produced a slick, sophisticated, well choreographed hit making dynasty. Its sound was unmistakable. It produced so many great artist and songs. The music went down smooth like a fine meal of , prime rib and filet mignon, washed down with a glass of Cristal Champaign.
But when you were in the mood for some Ham hocks, fried chicken, bar-b-qed ribs, collards , candied yam and cornbread...with a glass of Ripple to wash it down......then.there was only one place to go. Stax Records in Memphis, TN. A more earthy, hit ya in the gut type music. I`m talking bout some 'why did my baby leave me and pour bleach all over my best suit before she left' music ... some 'how the hell am I gonna pay this rent?' music, some 'I`ll worry about it all later, I`m going out to party' music. Stax Records served it up in all you can eat..buffet style.
I call it the little record company that could....and did with artist like Otis Redding, Al Green, Sam and Dave, Isaac Hayes, Rufus and Carla Thomas, Booker T, The Barkays, The Mad Lads, Eddie Floyd, Shirley Brown, Johnny Taylor, Little Milton, Wilson Pickett and William Bell...etc When I think Soul Music with a capital S, I think Stax Records! I proudly submit Stax Records for induction into the OOTP Hall of Fame.
