David Ruffin sings Reggae???? What da heck?

Now let me first say that I`m the worlds biggest David Ruffin fan. That being said....this song is just horrible. He takes a classic and just destroys it. Where are the Motown arrangers and producers when you need them? And what record label honcho said...put this out...people will love it.? I would like to think David did this song...only because they made him do it. lol Some songs actually sound better when done Reggae style. This one surely does not. Of course some may differ with my opinion, I am so harsh on him, just because I like him so much. :)

Since you mentioned overdub...I listed to it for the 10th time. David sings the song pretty much the way he always does. I don`t think he had that music in his ears when he was recording it, it would have thrown him off. LOL
Now i`m convinced...he had nothing to do with this at all. :)

And you may be right, Indeed it might just be an overdub. David might not have had any idea they were putting this song out. I have an audio interview of David I`m gonna post, when I figure out the best way to do it. In it he complains how Motown forced them to make the Psychedelic Shack/Cloud Nine album. And how the fans protested and wanted them to go back to the music they were known for. I was overseas during that time. so I don`t know how that album was received. It was defiantly a departure from what they usually do.

I agree Edie, David sounds fine. Its the arraignment of the song that`s bad. I don`t blame David for this fiasco at all.

One more thing...this is probably nothing more than an overdub of his voice over the Mickey Mouse Music. I'm searching for some background information on it. Stay tuned.

Listening again...can we say Bozo's Circus Big Top Music?? LOL

Whew! You had me scared at first Gene. David sounds just fine. It's that "Mickey Mouse Reggae Wanna Be" so-called music that's the culprit here. Whoever backs him should be flogged and tied up like cattle at the rodeo.

The music is laughable...but David's voice here unscathed. Great find btw!

Quincy Jones is thoroughly entwined in the musical background of my young adulthood. A genius of unique quality. I have been posting blogs and music throughout the years and decided to embark on the arduous but satisfying task of gathering some of it to remember the excellent legacy that he left.
