Have You Wondered-Where Are They Now?

Jerome Benton is a performer, backup dancer and lender of comedic antics to various musical acts. He is the inspiration for today's "hype man." He can be seen in music videos by Janet Jackson and Prince, but he is mostly known for his association with The Time.

Benton is the half brother to Time bassist, Terry Lewis and worked closely with the band behind the scenes in its initial stages.

During one performance, lead singer Morris…

Stoned-A Look At Sly & The Family

Sly Stone vanished into rumor in the 1980s, remembered only by the great songs ("I Want to Take You Higher," "Dance to the Music") he left behind. What's become of the funky leader of the Family Stone since he forsook his Woodstock-era utopianism for darkness, drugs, and isolation? After a few sightings—most notoriously at the 2006 Grammys—the author tracked the last of the rock recluses to…

Your Smile-The Rene' & Angela Story

I took my walk

around the square today

feeling a sense of renewal...and ease

I noticed the children as they ran and played

Moanin' For Love-A Look At Al Green

..around 4 a.m., October 17, 1974, when the last, great, sweet falsetto soul singer of the South eased into a bath after a long night of recording, he got a pan of boiling-hot grits poured on him by a spurned lover. The woman who chose grits as her revenge was 29-year-old Mary Woodson, just another notch in a long line of ladies, and not even the one who occupied the greater portion of Al Green's erotic…

Black Ivory

BLACK IVORY were one of New York's best loved soul groups. The trio - Leroy Burgess III, Stuart Bascombe and Russell Patterson - were discovered by producer/arranger Patrick Adams when hey were known as the Mellow Sounds, and although he amended the name, the type of music suggested by their original moniker was spot on. Adams cut them on a series of delicate harmony ballads for Today records - scoring notable successes in the… Continue

Abdul Wadud

..father of Raheem DeVaughn

Abdul Wadud

An outstanding cellist, Abdul Wadud has concentrated solely on the instrument since the age of nine, and never decided to double on bass. His plucking and bowed solos have been featured in jazz and symphonic/classical settings, and Wadud's easily the finest cellist to emerge from the '60s and '70s generation. He studied at Youngstown State and Oberlin in the late…

The Whatnauts

Introducing the Whatnauts is the kind of hard-to-find album that makes you pee in your pants when you uncover a copy dusting away at some Goodwill, yard sale, or flea market. Scavenging for their

recordings is what you had to do until the late ‘90s when no fewer than

three CDs of the Whatnauts’ music finally hit the streets. Obscure

beyond reason, the Whatnauts were comprised of Garnett Jones,…

Out Of The Past..and into the Future

Raheem DeVaughn is finally back with a new album that's inspired equally by the gospel sounds of the church as the street funk of hip-hop. The DC native built a devoted following on the independent scene, touring and releasing mixtapes before being introduced to a wider audience in 2005 with the release of his debut disc The Love Experience, a success that…

The Prisonaires...Magazine Article From 1954

When five self-trained Tennessee State Prison convicts waxed a cool disc called "Just Walking In The Rain," the Prisonaires became a nation-wide sensation. Their sweet ballad has already sold a quarter-of-a-million copies.

The story of the group's success as artists, however, is not nearly so staggering as the story of five cons who can leave prison just about any time they please. You see, in order to maintain their…

The Prisonaires

January 18

*Johnny Bragg was born on this date in 1926. He was an African-American singer.

From Nashville, Tenn., as a teenager in 1943, Bragg was sentenced to six life terms in the Tennessee State Prison. The charge was rape, he always denied the charges, and Governor Frank Clement commuted his sentence in 1959. He soon returned to prison on a parole violation and spent time in and out of incarceration until 1977.…

The Schoolboys

The Schoolboys sound almost uncannily similar to Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, but they predate them by close to a year in terms of recording and success. Formed in Harlem's Cooper Junior High School in 1954 or early 1955, with Harold Atley as leader, James Edwards (first tenor), Roger Hayes (second tenor), James "Charlie" McKay (baritone), and Renaldo Gamble (bass), they performed in school talent shows and became… Continue

The Five Echoes

The Five Echoes are notable for having been the group that both Earl Lewis (Channels, Flamingos) and Johnnie Taylor both passed through at one time or another. The original Chicago-based group -- Constant "Count" Sims (baritone), Herbert Lewis (baritone), Jimmy Marshall (bass), and Tommy Hunt (second tenor) -- originally called themselves the Flames because they hung out at the Morocco Hotel, home to a famous nightspot, the Flame.

The Flames…
